Today, we are thrilled to celebrate Sarah Larochelle, who has been named the 2024 University of Waterloo Faculty of Health Co-op Student of the Year! This well-deserved recognition highlights Sarah’s dedication, hard work, and outstanding contributions during her co-op term with us.
Making an Impact at PhysioMira Physiotherapy
During her eight-month work term, Sarah played a vital role in both administrative and patient care aspects of our clinic. While her official title was Administrative Assistant, her responsibilities extended far beyond that. She assisted with physiotherapy routines, developed personalised exercise programs, maintained a welcoming and supportive environment for patients, and even optimized clinic operations through her innovative problem-solving skills.
One of Sarah’s most significant accomplishments was streamlining our inventory system. She took the initiative to develop a tracking system that improved efficiency and organization, benefiting both the physiotherapists and administrative staff. This project pushed her out of her comfort zone, but the results were transformative for our daily workflow.
Beyond operational improvements, Sarah had a profound impact on patient care. One of her most rewarding experiences was working closely with a client recovering from orthopedic spinal surgery. She dedicated time to researching rehabilitation techniques and with her supervisor developed a tailored exercise program that significantly contributed to the patient’s recovery. Witnessing this patient’s progress firsthand reinforced her passion for physiotherapy and patient-centered care.
A Passion for Health Care
Sarah’s journey toward physiotherapy was fueled by her personal experiences with sports injuries and her desire to create a more compassionate and effective patient experience. She has always known she wanted to be in health care but sought a path that allowed her to make a direct and meaningful impact. Her experiences at PhysioMira strengthened her commitment to pursuing physiotherapy as a career.
Through her co-op placement, Sarah gained invaluable insights into the complexities of the health care system—learning firsthand how much work goes on behind the scenes to provide seamless patient care. She credits her academic background in Kinesiology and Medical Physiology for equipping her with the knowledge necessary to excel in her role, particularly in understanding human movement and rehabilitation techniques.
